 Red Kangaroo

Animal Picture

The Red Kangaroo is one of the largest living marsupials.

The biggest marsupial.

Red kangaroos cover a large part of Australia. They usually live in small mobs of about 10, consisting of a dominant male and several females and juveniles.

The male kangaroo is very strong and large - up to 2.4 metres tall when standing. Strangely, male and females are different colours. The male is a deep red colour. The female is often called a "blue-flyer" because she is blue-grey.

Red kangaroos are mainly nocturnal, spending the day resting in shade. At night they move out into the open to graze or find water. They eat only grass and plants.

They travel in two ways - a slow awkward crawl with their small forearms and their famous hoping motion. When going fast, a large red kangaroo can easily travel forward about four metres in one jump.
