| | Koala
They sleep between 18 to 20 hours a day. Koala, Australia's best known and favourite animal.
Koalas live in eucalytp forests. They spend most of their time curled up asleep in the high treetops. Their tiny tail and padded bottom lets them sleep comfortably in hard tree branches.
Although koalas look slow, they can move quickly when they want to and are fast, strong climbers. Their sharp claws help them climb better.
Koalas are very choosy eaters, eating only particular gum leaves. They can eat 1 kg of leaves every day. They rarely need to drink water, getting most of the moisture they need from the leaves.
Females have one baby at a time. After the baby leaves its mother's pouch it stays close to her, ususally riding comfortably on her furry back. Read the Koala keeper's diary. |
