About 140 species of snakes are found in Australia. Only about 20 species are dangerous to humans. The most aggressive and poisonous is the taipan.
The taipan eats small animals such as rats, mice and birds. Generally it prefers to retreat when aware of a threat. However, if cornered, the taipan will defend itself, often striking several times.
